Polystyrene

Polystyrene (PS)

Polystyrene is a synthetic polymer made from monomers of the aromatic hydrocarbon styrene. It can be solid or foamed. General-purpose polystyrene is clear, hard, and brittle. It is an inexpensive resin per unit weight with a relatively low melting point.

PS is classified into three main types: GPPS (General Purpose), HIPS (High Impact), and EPS (Expanded). It is widely used in packaging, construction, consumer goods, and electronics.

One of the most widely used kinds of plastic that has excellent transparency, high stiffness and excellent moldability (injection, extrusion, foam molding, etc.). GPPS is a low-cost material that can be easily colored to produce solid or transparent tints and is not hygroscopic — so no need to dry before processing.

Benefits

Low cost, easily colored, not hygroscopic, high stiffness, excellent transparency

Applications

Injection MoldingLunch box cases, confectionary trays, CD cases, cosmetic packaging
ThermoformingDisposable cups, cutlery, food containers, lids

GPPS

HIPS is an amorphous thermoplastic material, opaque or translucent rather than transparent, used in lower heat applications. It offers superior impact strength compared to GPPS and improved resistance to stress cracking and crazing caused by organic liquids, oils, and fats.

Benefits

Superior impact strength, improved stress crack resistance, resistant to oils & fats, good dimensional stability

Applications

Injection MoldingCutlery, laptop casings, CD/DVD covers, pen lids, hangers
ExtrusionThick sheet for light panels, signage, refrigerator liners
ThermoformingFood packaging trays, dairy containers, yoghurt pots

HIPS

A rigid, closed cell, thermoplastic foam material produced from solid beads of polystyrene, polymerised from styrene monomer and containing an expansion gas dissolved within the bead. EPS is ideal for packaging and construction due to its light weight, strength, and excellent thermal insulation properties.

Benefits

Highly resistant to biological corrosion, minimizes moisture effect, good shock absorption, excellent thermal insulation

Applications

Protective PackagingCushioning for electronic goods, appliance packaging, void fill
Thermal InsulationThermal boards in building construction, insulated panels, cold storage
